My Life is my Masterpiece.

For my final artist blog, I decided to look for something more relevant to life rather than just awesome, and hopefully I would find both. While searching Rhizome for recent art I stumbled across something known by everyone, iphone apps. Artist Paul Slocum deigned a software company called “Softoft Techech” that recently launched a new application called “Sir Sampleton” for the iphone, ipod touch and ipad. Paul Slocum is an independent programmer, musician, and artist living in Brooklyn. Slocum is known for the music software that he created for the Atari 2600 game console and commodore 64 computer, he has shown his artwork in museums in New York as well as internationally. And finally Slocum owns the “And/Or Gallery” in Dallas, Texas for the last few years.

Sir Sampleton is an app that mimics the Casio SK-1, this app was inspired by the toy keyboards of the 1980’s. In the technically world that we live in its easier to carry around a phone then a clunky keyboard, it is now possible to have similar sound and functionality with this app as one did with an old fashioned keyboard. The app allows the user to sample sound through a microphone attached to the product and then play that sound through a digital keyboard located on the touch screen. You can use the settings within the app to modify the vibrato, note length, and sample time of the recordings; finally the app also has a small rhythm bank to use. Once you view the short demo video you can download the app onto your apple product.

Overall, I think this is an awesome art idea. Cell phones travel with us were ever we go, what better way to share art or create a public art project then through itunes and apps. Anyone can purchase this app and create there own music and sound through the creativity of Paul Slocum.
